Why restoration drywall work is different
General drywall patching fixes a doorknob hole. Restoration drywall repair follows a loss, and the most important step happens before any board goes up: confirming that the cavity is ready. Studs, bottom plates and insulation must be dry, and any mold or soot must already be cleaned. Closing a wall over damp framing traps moisture and invites growth. Our Elroy, WI crew checks moisture readings against dry reference areas and only then begins installation.
Restoration repairs also tend to be larger. Water damage commonly calls for removing the lower portion of a wall, a technique often called a flood cut, which gives drying equipment access to the cavity. Fire and smoke can require replacing whole ceilings. Our team plans the repair so seams fall on framing and the patch blends with the existing wall.
Choosing the right board
Most interior walls use half inch gypsum board, and ceilings may use lighter sag resistant board. In bathrooms, laundry rooms and other damp areas we install moisture resistant board where appropriate, and cement board behind tile. Walls between an attached garage and the house, and certain other assemblies, may require fire rated Type X board under local building codes. We match what was originally installed unless code or your preference calls for an upgrade, and we explain the difference in the estimate.
Insulation removed during mitigation is replaced before the board goes up, matching the original type and thickness unless you choose otherwise.
Taping, finishing and texture
Seams are taped and covered with joint compound in several coats, sanded between applications. The Gypsum Association describes finish levels from zero to five, and most painted living spaces are finished to Level 4, while walls under strong side lighting or with glossy paint may call for Level 5, a thin skim over the entire surface. We confirm the level in writing.
Texture matching is where many repairs fail. Our finishers reproduce common textures such as orange peel, knockdown and skip trowel by adjusting compound thickness, tool and spray pressure, testing on scrap board before touching your wall.
Paint and final walkthrough
New drywall is primed so the paint finish absorbs evenly, then painted to match the surrounding wall. Where the old paint has faded, painting the full wall to the nearest corner often gives a better match than spot painting. Baseboards and trim are reinstalled or replaced. If your repair follows a leak, the Water Damage Restoration page describes the earlier stages that made this final step possible.
Before we leave, you walk the finished rooms with the crew lead under normal lighting. Any spots where a seam, texture or paint edge does not meet your expectations are noted and corrected. Dust protection comes down only after that walkthrough, and the work area is vacuumed so the room is ready to use.
